Stress Isn’t Just Stress Anymore (And No, It’s Not Just You)

There was a time when stress felt… manageable.

You could power through. Shake it off. Tell yourself “it’s just a busy week” and keep it moving.

Now?

The same stress hits different.

Little things feel bigger. Your patience is shorter. And your tolerance for nonsense? Practically gone.

And if you’ve caught yourself thinking:

  • “Why am I like this lately?”

  • “I used to handle way more than this…”Let’s pause right there.

This isn’t you falling apart. This is your body responding differently.

My Experience With This

I can’t tell you the relief I felt when I learned… it wasn’t me. It was just where I was at.

For a while, I felt like I was carrying the weight of the world—my little world—but it was enough.

I was stretched thin and honestly, I felt like I was about to crack.

Stress was at an all-time high, and I couldn’t understand why my usual way of handling things—“stop, reset, get going again”—wasn’t working anymore.

And the last thing I thought of? The big M word.

I knew it was coming eventually… but I also quietly hoped it might skip me, like it seemed to for my grandma and some of my aunts. But life had other plans.

A big move to another province, COVID, and a few other hits along the way… it all caught up to me and stopped me in my tracks.

And honestly? I’m glad it did.

Because underneath the stress—and the thoughts of “I think I’m losing it”—I was forced to pause.

To give myself some grace and I started being honest with the people around me and saying, “Something isn’t right.” And I started looking for answers.

What’s Actually Going On (In Plain English)

Stress isn’t just in your head—it’s a full-body response.

Your nervous system is constantly asking:👉 Am I safe… or am I under pressure?

When the answer is “pressure” (emails, kids, work, life… everything), your body releases stress hormones to help you cope. That’s great… short term.

But when it’s constant?

  • your system stays “on”

  • recovery gets slower

  • and your capacity shrinks

Now add in hormonal shifts…

And suddenly:👉 the volume on stress gets turned all the way up

Same life. Different response.

Why “Just Push Through” Stops Working

Let’s be honest—most of us were taught to handle stress like this:

  • Do more

  • Push harder

  • Rest later (maybe 😅)

But at this stage?

That strategy starts to backfire.

Because your body isn’t asking for more force…It’s Asking For Better Support.

A Better Way to Look at It

What if the goal isn’t to eliminate stress (because… life 😅)

👉 What helps here:

  • Building consistent sleep habits

But to change how your body experiences it?

That could mean:

  • actually recovering (yes, that counts as productive)

  • building habits that support your nervous system

  • noticing when “pushing” is making things worse, not better

It’s not about doing less. It’s about doing smarter.

How Stress Shows Up Across the Phases

Premenopause (approx. 30–45) You can still get away with a lot here. Late nights, high stress, skipping meals… your body bounces back.

But this is where the groundwork is being laid (for better or worse 👀)

  • Fueling your body properly

  • Not living in a constant “go mode”

Perimenopause (approx. 40–50+) This is where things start to feel louder.

Stress hits harder, Emotions are quicker, and your usual coping strategies? Not as reliable

👉 What helps here:

  • Prioritizing recovery (not just productivity)

  • Lowering unnecessary stress where possible

  • Recognizing this shift is real—not “in your head”

Menopause (average around 45–55) This is the point when periods have stopped for 12 consecutive months.

Your body becomes less tolerant of chronic stress.

If nothing changes, stress can feel constant… not occasional.

👉 What helps here:

  • Creating structure around rest and recovery

  • Supporting your body instead of overriding it

  • Being more intentional with your energy

Postmenopause (55+) For many women, this phase can bring more clarity and steadiness.

Less fluctuation, More awareness, and a stronger sense of what actually matters

(Not perfect—but often more grounded.)

👉 What helps here:

  • Maintaining supportive habits

  • Protecting your peace a little more unapologetically

  • Leaning into what actually feels good and sustainable

If You Take Anything From This

👉 It is okay to STOP

👉 It is okay to Give Yourself Grace

Talk to the people around you.

And if that circle feels small right now, start somewhere. Read, learn, find spaces or a FB group where these conversations are happening.

Because once you start understanding what’s going on…Everything begins to make a little more sense. And you realize you’re not alone in this.

A Simple Check-In

What’s one thing that used to feel easy… that doesn’t anymore?

That’s your clue.

If This Helped

If you read this and thought, “okay… that makes sense,”send it to someone who’s been saying “I don’t feel like myself lately.”

You’d be surprised how many women are quietly trying to figure this out on their own.
